I think this is the longest hiatus in my blogging ever! Busy, busy, busy!
Well, the beach trip was fabulous! We drove for a little over five hours to get there, checked in with no problems and then ran down to the beach. It was pretty chilly and Peter wouldn’t get wet past his ankles. Katy was a trooper and I dragged her out to the knee-high mark where we squatted down and shivered, trying to convince ourselves we were having fun.
The waves were pretty strong and they knocked me around so much that I had to hold Katy up out of the water each time one approached. I was tossed around enough that my suit filled with some sort of brown and bumpy sea weed. Peter looked pretty smart back on shore, I must say. But, Katy and I conquered the high seas!

Friday morning we hoped that Katy would sleep in…she didn’t. She DID learn to say two words: boat and beach. She loved the brief ferry ride over to the island, and she knew a little about boats from watching “Finding Nemo”. I dusted off my camera and we trooped out to the beach for a little photo shoot. Peter was a very good sport. He patiently waited while I adjusted the tripod or chased Katybird around with the camera. She would say “cheese” right after the camera clicked…impeccable timing. I don’t even know who taught her to say “cheese” for the camera. She is really blowing us away with her newly expanded vocab. She sometimes says “noke” instead of “nope”. Too cute!

Peter next took Katy out to the playground so she could ride the “weeeee”. First she put pebbles at the bottom of it, and then he helped her knock them all off by sliding down.
We then forayed out into the island life to see about buying some floaties for Miss Bird’s arms. Of course, I left hers at home. I think we played on the beach some more, and then took a two hour boat tour to watch for dolphins.
The dolphins were too far away to interest Katy much, but when the captain brought up a net full of sea creatures, Katy perked right up. They released some critters, including a blue crab who had 1,000,000 eggs attached to her underbelly. We also saw a papa sea horse who had babies in his pouch, and a blow fish who was all puffed up and turned upside down when they dropped him in the tank. Anyway, Katy was “fishing” in the tank with a little net and almost caught a dead fish a couple of times. She threw a fit when we made her give the net to another kid. It was pretty embarrassing because you’re stuck on this boat – nowhere to hide. Her incisors are coming in and they have not been gentle.
While we were waiting for boat ride Katy noticed a couple of little girls eating an orange push-up. Of course, I had to buy one for her to try and Peter helped her with it. Bonus: it had Scooby Doo on the outside packaging…bow wow wow!
After the boat ride we beached again for a bit and then tried out the swimming pool. It was pretty cold, too. There is definitely a reason for the “seasonal rates” at this place.
OK, I think the next morning was Peter’s birthday – wahoo! Katy woke up early so the two of us went to the beach and let Daddy sleep in. Happy birthday to him. She spent the entire time asking where Peter was. It started out to be cute, but after an hour of it the cuteness wore off.
I tried to distract her by collecting shells. We picked up tiny ones and I told her they were “baby” shells. She looked at them and said, “Waaa” like a crying baby. Ah ha ha ha ha! She is too smart for her own good! Baby shells. Waaa. Eventually I tried to slip her some “ish” which is what she calls goldfish crackers.
Some alert sea gulls noticed us and swarmed around, hovering two feet above us for about three minutes. Mom would have peed all over her beach towel and raced for the open waters. I just tried to wave them off, but they thought I was throwing food to them. One pooped on my back – totally nasty.
Katy loved the fact that the birds were her friends and finally paying attention to her. She danced around and tried to convince them to come even closer. I finally realized I was outnumbered and scooped up the Katybird, the beach bag with all the towels and headed for help from the birthday boy.

Peter joined us at the beach and we played until noon. Then it was time to clean up the condo. That’s right. I arranged for a lower rate by offering to do the maid service myself. It also let us extend our check-out from 11am to 2pm. I thought we might stay on the island and play a bit more, but we were tired and headed for home. Along the way we stopped for some bluebonnet pics, but we all looked kind of trashy and I don’t think those pics will ever see the light of day.
One of the back tires shredded about 30 minutes from home so Peter changed it while I chased Katy all over an empty parking lot. She likes for us to quote “don’t pull the rope!” from Disney’s Doodlebop show. It makes her laugh every time. We also had to sing Old MacDonald for much of the way home. She’s a very demanding boss.
Sunday was relatively uneventful…or at least nothing major that I can remember. Katy did bring home a project that she made in Nursery. Within a few hours it was being stuffed into her potty training chair (which is decorative only, thus far) and then Katy would point to it and call it poopoo. I don’t know who she thought she was fooling. Not it’s all mangled and the feet and wings have been viciously ripped from the body. Good thing I took a picture before all the damage was done.
Yesterday was Monday and I mainly worked on editing photos so I can’t say Katy had many adventures. She has started to sit up on the computer desk and be very interested in what I’m doing. We opened an e-mail from Warren & Marjean that showed cute little animals. Well, Katy absolutely fell in love! Now she points to the monitor and asks for the bow wow and the cat. She laughs her head off when she sees them! Then Warren & Marjean watched Katy for us while I had a photo shoot. She spent a lot of time outside (which she loves) and Marjean bought her an adorable little blue sailor dress. Hmmm…when is the next photo shoot for Katy?
Today we blew bubbles in the back yard and found a horny toad.
When I told her what he was, she immediately said “toad” and has since been asking for him. This is such a fun age with a new discovery around every corner, but she is also very clingy and her teeth were bothering her. We both needed some space tonight so luckily I had to clean and Mom kept her tonight. Mom was forced to sing Old MacDonald most of the night, so she added Mama, Dada and Katy to the farm, with Chloe and Jaxson thrown in for good measure. Katy was even crabby at lunch with Ruth, Helen and Danette so I was very relieved to hear that she was good for Mom.
Today is Sarah’s birthday and I think we had Katy leave her a phone message, but I can’t remember for sure. It’s all blurring together. We did receive news that tomorrow we’re scheduled for another conference call with a new birth mother and father. We’ll see if anything pans out. She’s due at the end of May. What would Katy think of a new baby brother?
I think that’s it for now. I feel like I had to catch up on a week of Katyness. I sure hope she appreciates all this journaling some day. I would rather be reading in the tub right now.
